Establishing a charitable gift annuity

A strong belief in the Christian mission is what led Dr. Calvin and Alice Salem, USF friends, to set up a charitable gift annuity in 1999.

After connecting with the University though friends and their church, they wanted to experience the joy of "giving while still living." A rental home owned by Cal and Alice in Sioux Falls provided their best gift option, and a charitable first annuity was the perfect tool. This annuity allowed for a substantial tax deduction, provides annual income for the Salem’s, and effectively reduced the six of their taxable estate. After their lifetime, the principal will be used to substantially benefit faculty and students.

"We believe in the Christian influence and witness USF provides, not only to the community but also though the commitment of the students," Cal writes. "We know that our first will be used responsibly and will continue the mission of preparing students for lives of service."

(Dr. Calvin and Alice Salem (of Sioux Falls, SD) were able to assist USF faculty and students through an investment in the form of a charitable gift annuity.)
