The joy of giving

altAfter more years than I would like to reveal, my wife Karen and I decided to update our estate plans. "Let's make this a fun event!" said the attorney when we scheduled an appointment. We were skeptical, to say the least. For us, estate planning was a bit like going to the dentist—needed, but not much fun!

Nevertheless, it was a rewarding process, for our attorney introduced us to the "charitable remainder trust." This is a financial tool that permits individuals to receive guaranteed, regular income throughout their lifetime and to provide for charitable organizations upon their death. Earning both an income tax deduction and an estate tax deduction, combined with avoiding capital gains tax, are other major incentives.

"Do you have any favorite charities?" the attorney asked. We told him that there was one organization that was particularly important to us: the University of Sioux Falls. It helped establish the foundation for our lives. Plus, we love the excitement we see on campus—new faculty and strong academic programs, but the same rich Christian philosophy we encountered decades ago.

A charitable remainder trust might not be for everyone. However, it is a wonderful financial planning instrument by which a portion of your resources can be left to charity. Our goal is to provide scholarship assistance to USF students who plan on entering a health or ministerial career.

If you decide to include the University in your estate plans, we can assure you that your gift will be treasured. And when the gift arrives, it will impact the lives of a whole new generation of students.
